Sylvia West was born in Warwick, Rhode Island on November 2, 1934 and completed her life on earth at Ivy Hill nursing home on March 25, 2007.
Raised in West Palm Beach, Florida, she graduated from Palm Beach High School and then attended the Rhode Island School of Nursing.
On December 1, 1953, Sylvia married Bob who was then in the Air Force. They eventually settled in Orlando where, for over 20 years, she kept the home and raised her children.
In 1979 they relocated to Brevard, North Carolina. In recent years she worked as a Commercial Insurance Agent for Jerome & Summey Insurance.
Throughout her life she devoted herself to serving her Lord and others, showing compassion by words of kindness and encouragement, and with phone calls, visits, cards, and prayers for those who were sick, shut-in, lonely or otherwise distressed.
Sylvia was predeceased by her parents: John George and Graciella (Grace) DeVaudreuil Buteau, and two brothers: John, Jr. and Joseph Buteau. She is survived by two sisters: Madeline (and Michael) Nave of Ormond Beach, FL and Gertrude (Trudy) Drake of Boynton Beach, FL; her devoted husband of 53 years, Robert Alton (Bob) West, Jr. of Brevard, NC; three children: Suzanne (and Fred) Gore of Brevard, NC, David (and Vickie) West of Dade City, FL, and Robynne (and Anthony) Genton of Charleston, WV; eight grandchildren: Larissa, Fred, and Josiah Gore, Aaron and Allison Genton, Jennifer Aguilar, Jessica Johns, and Jonathan West; and three great-grandchildren: Nathaniel, Michael and Matthew Johns.
A memorial service is planned for 11 a.m., Friday, April 20, 2007 at Joy Outreach Fellowship. The family requests that instead of flowers, any memorial gifts be made to TCH Hospice, PO Box 2440, Brevard, NC 28712.
